Transmissions can be tricky business and it’s not always clear to drivers what the best course of action is. Here is some helpful info on transmission maintenance.
When we talk about how to maintain, service, repair, and care for a transmission, what are we actually talking about? What is the transmission? The transmission isn’t just one thing, it’s actually a set of things. Every transmission contains a plethora of different parts and components that all have their own role to play. If even just one of these components is underperforming, your entire transmission could be hampered.
Given this, it’s kind of misleading that we talk about the transmission as one single unit. It’s a collection of items. This should also give you an idea of how difficult it can be to maintain and repair a transmission. There are so many parts, and some can be hard to locate, so transmission service takes time.
Because of the complexity of transmissions, you don’t want to trust their service to just anybody. There are many great mechanics out there who can service many different parts of your vehicle. But transmissions are different. It’s always wisest to bring your vehicle into a specialty transmission shop—such as Mister Transmission—for maintenance and repair. Specialty transmission shops have tools and expertise that mechanics at all-service auto shops and dealerships don’t have.
It’s not a huge difference, but manual transmissions generally require less service than automatic transmissions. Because they are automated, there’s more that can go wrong, and they’re more intricately designed. Diagnosing, locating, and fixing a problem in an automatic transmission often takes longer than doing so in a manual transmission.
When a transmission is very badly damaged, or when the problem cannot be pinpointed, you might be offered the opportunity to have your transmission entirely replaced. At Mister Transmission, we generally advise against this unless the damage is to extensive. These “new” transmissions are typically refurbished and their parts have an unknown provenance. Instead, we recommend a transmission overhaul in which your transmission is dissected piece by piece. Each part is examined and cleaned or replaced, ensuring that the problem part has been removed.
At Mister Transmission, we can perform transmission maintenance, repair, and service on automatic transmissions, manual transmissions, and CVT transmissions. To learn more, please contact us. We’re also happy to announce that we have a comprehensive COVID-19 policy to keep everybody safe.
The evolution of transmissions has made these machines and systems increasingly complex. When transmission repairs are required, determining the cause and cure for what ails can be tricky.
