Transmissions need to be serviced, maintained, and repaired from time to time, but how often, and what does this transmission service look like?
Sometimes procrastination is not that big of a deal. With transmissions, this is not the case. If you notice something off about your transmission, don’t ignore it. Don’t be one of those drivers who drives for months with their check engine light on or who disregards grinding when shifting gears. Going to a transmission shop for service as soon as you can after noticing symptoms of bad transmission behaviour can save you thousands of dollars—and a fair few headaches—down the line. Don’t let small problems turn into big ones.
Unusual whirring noises, weird clunking sounds, and humming or grinding noises can all be bad signs. It can be hard to tell if a noise is unusual, though, but if you feel grinding when you change gears, that’s definitely a sign that you need transmission service. The same might be true if you smell burning or if your transmission slips into neutral after you change gears. Nothing good can come from ignoring these problems. You should at least check your transmission fluid to investigate further.
When you perceive any transmission issue, or just as part of your routine transmission maintenance, you should check your transmission fluid, or maybe your transmission oil if you drive a manual transmission. An insufficient level of transmission fluid can cause or exacerbate just about any transmission problem.
If your transmission fluid doesn’t reach the recommended level, top it up. If the fluid is foul-smelling or opaque—as opposed to being mostly translucent and neutral smelling—then it’s possible there’s something wrong with your transmission. You can check your transmission fluid yourself, but you can also have the technicians at Mister Transmission check it for you. We know how to judge the quality of your fluid. If you find that you’re topping your fluid up every month or if you notice patches of fluid underneath your vehicle, then you have a leak. You will need to visit Mister Transmissions so we can reseal it.
