If you drive a vehicle with an automatic transmission, what are some common automatic transmission services that your vehicle is likely to need?
Whether you suspect something is wrong with your transmission or you’re just conducting routine maintenance, automatic transmission service usually starts with checking the fluid. Automatic transmission fluid is absolutely vital to automatic transmissions (as similar fluids are to manual transmissions). Transmission fluid lubricates and cools the transmission. Without the right amount and the right quality of transmission fluid, your transmission won’t be able to operate properly.
There is no transmission problem that cannot be caused, or at least exacerbated, by a lack of good transmission fluid. Good transmission fluid is neutral smelling and largely transparent, with a reddish hue. If your fluid has an unpleasant odour or if it’s opaque, it should be changed and an internal inspection of your transmission might be a good idea.
Automobiles today are all manufactured with on-board computers that can regulate the functions of the transmission. This has made transmissions more efficient and easier to drive. But it also has some drawbacks. These digital systems are more complex so servicing them has become more complicated. An effective transmission shop should offer on-board diagnostics (OBD) computer scans. With the proper tools, transmission technicians can interface with your car’s on-board computer and this allows them to pinpoint the causes of certain problems.
Having an on-board computer telling you there’s nothing wrong is one thing. But you want to know that your transmission is functioning properly in real world conditions. Road tests can offer this. Good transmission shops provide both a stationary test and a driving test. You want every position of your transmission to be tested for slipping, noises, erratic shifting, and early shift patterns.
Not all transmission symptoms have clear causes. A lift inspection allows a transmission technician to check a variety of different components and check if a minor adjustment can solve a problem your transmission has been experiencing. Pan examinations can be very revelatory and can help technicians determine the extent to which your transmission is damaged.

The evolution of transmissions has made these machines and systems increasingly complex. When transmission repairs are required, determining the cause and cure for what ails can be tricky.
