Unlike a cracked windshield or a flat tire, it’s not always readily obvious when a transmission needs repairing. The transmission is buried under the hood with the engine. This is where many of us fear to tread. Even those of us who remember what we learned in our high school auto garage class, and even those of us who enjoy learning about and repairing our vehicles, the transmission can be exceptionally complicated. How can we know when we need a transmission repair?
The first thing to point out is that with regular transmission service and maintenance, wondering whether or not your transmission requires a repair will not plague your existence. It won’t be much of an issue at all. Bringing in your transmission for regular service will spot any wear and tear or any other signs of potential problems before they manifest in functioning of your vehicle.
At Mister Transmission, we run a multi-check inspection as part of our basic transmission service. The multi-check inspection consists of: a fluid check, a road test, a lift inspection/diagnosis, and a pan examination. By running these tests, technicians can ascertain whether or not your transmission needs repairing and can also determine if the conditions are right for transmission problems to develop, ie: there is an unreasonable amount of wear and tear on one or more components of your transmission.
An easy way of knowing whether or not your transmission needs a repair is if you’re experiencing problems. If you have transmission problems you probably need a transmission repair. How can you tell if you’re having transmission problems? Well that depends on the problem.
If you see patches or streaks of clear, reddish liquid underneath your vehicle, it would seem that you have a leak. If you’re leaking transmission fluid, a reseal job is the repair you need. This can be a quick and painless procedure, but it can also be tricky, depending on the size and location of the leak. Obviously, a total reseal job is a bigger repair.
Another common transmission problem is gears sticking or, conversely, slipping out of gear. If your car slips out of gear while you’re driving, or if you feel resistance or “sticking” when you’re trying to shift gears, you almost certainly have a transmission problem that needs repairing. Just what form this transmission repair will take depends on what exactly is causing the problem, which could be a number of things. If yours is a computerized transmission, then technicians can run a computerized diagnostic program in which they can communicate with your vehicle’s onboard computer in order to discover the location and nature of the problem.
Let’s face it, if you’re wondering if your transmission needs to be repaired, then it probably does. There’s no sense in waiting and letting any potential problems grow and grow. Bring it in today and the technicians at Mister Transmission will check it out for you and tell you what, if anything, needs to be repaired.
If you are wondering if your transmission might need a repair, it would be best to contact us today. We’d be happy to hear from you and figure out what’s going on with your transmission.
The evolution of transmissions has made these machines and systems increasingly complex. When transmission repairs are required, determining the cause and cure for what ails can be tricky.
