Automatic transmission service is most of what we do at Mister Transmission. But how is automatic transmission service different from manual transmission service?
Your transmission, like all the other components in your automobile, needs occasional service and maintenance. Without enough transmission fluid, an automatic transmission will overheat and cause damage. Friction surfaces that are too worn down won’t be able to do their job any more. Faulty sensors will mean your transmission is not operating properly. And all of it could see your vehicle slip out of gear, grind and resist when you change gears, and, ultimately, fail to deliver power to your wheels.
The transmission delivers power from the engine to the axles, and thus the wheels. More specifically, the transmission delivers the right amount of power. When you begin driving from a stop, your wheels have a rotational speed of, well, zero, even if you had been revving your engine for 15 minutes. The transmission adjusts this imbalance, much like the gear shifter on a bicycle. If the gear is too high, you’ll have trouble getting going; too low and you’ll be pedaling and pedaling and not getting anywhere very fast.
In a manual drive transmission, you must manually change gears yourself using the gear shifter. This is essentially the same principle as with a bicycle. Automatic transmissions, on the other hand, automatically change the gear ratio as your automobile is in motion. Automatic transmissions allow the engine to provide a range of torque and speed outputs while the engine maintains a relatively high rotational speed. Ultimately, an automatic transmission requires less work from the driver. Because of this, many find driving an automatic transmission easier. Nevertheless, others prefer driving a manual transmission because it gives them more control over their vehicle, and because manual transmissions tend to be slightly more fuel efficient.
Most of what we do at Mister Transmission is automatic transmission service. We’re perfectly capable and happy to service manual transmissions, too, it’s just that the vast majority of cars in Canada are automatic. Manual transmissions may only make up 9% of Canadian vehicles. In terms of service, the differences are minimal. Common automatic transmission services include topping up the automatic transmission fluid, draining it and replacing it with new fluid, replacing defective solenoid packs, and resealing leaks.
