The more you know about transmissions and transmission problems, the better. But this can be difficult and you can’t know everything. Transmissions are complex and intricate pieces of machinery. Figuring out if they are working properly and, if not, what is causing those problems can be very tricky. That is why well trained and highly skilled technicians like those at Mister Transmission exist: to identify and fix your transmission problems. But that doesn’t mean that you can’t arm yourself with a little knowledge, allowing you to spot transmission problems when they occur and prevent them from worsening.
Let us begin with what is maybe the easiest transmission problem to identify. A fluid leak. If you see a patch or a trail of reddish fluid on the ground underneath your car after you have parked, you have a leak in your transmission. And you don’t want that; a transmission leak can lead to low fluid levels which can lead to other problems. And fixing a leak is a relatively straightforward fix. It requires a reseal job, though, and unfortunately, pinpointing the cause and area of the leak is not always easy. However, when you notice a leak, bring your car into Mister Transmission and we will seal it up for you.
As mentioned above, low transmission fluid levels can lead to problems. One common problem is a slipping transmission. How can you tell if your transmission is slipping? For new drivers who haven’t experienced this before, it can be difficult tell. It’s also rather difficult to explain, suffice it to say that you can feel your transmission “slip”. If you’re driving in one gear and your transmission slips into another on its own, that’s a problem. Check your transmission fluid and top it up. If the problem continues, a technician will need to investigate further.
But transmission shifting problems are not just limited to it slipping out of gear. Rough shifts are also a clear sign that something is amiss with your transmission. You want your shifts to be smooth and easy, not rough and bumpy. Delayed engagement is another sign of a transmission problem. Of course, all transmissions are different and operate differently. But you want it to respond and engage quickly, so you can be sure your transmission is running effectively and you are driving a safe and properly working vehicle.
This should go without saying, but considering that so many people ignore it, it’s worth mentioning. If you’re transmission warning light is flashing, that’s a problem. Bring your vehicle into Mister Transmission so we can check it out. Not in a few months, not sometime in the future when your schedule clears up, do it as soon as possible. You do not want to be driving around with a potentially serious transmission problem.
If you wish to know more about how to identify transmission problems and what causes those problems, or if you would like to have your transmission repaired or serviced, please get in touch! We would love to take a look at your vehicle’s transmission.
The evolution of transmissions has made these machines and systems increasingly complex. When transmission repairs are required, determining the cause and cure for what ails can be tricky.
