Transmission problems can be costly, inconvenient, and even dangerous. What can you do to avoid these problems and keep your transmission in working order?
In an automatic transmission, there is no transmission problem that cannot be caused or exacerbated by a lack of transmission fluid, or poor-quality transmission fluid. First, you want to use the best fluid for your transmission. Your vehicle owner’s manual should recommend a transmission fluid but if you’re unsure, you can bring your vehicle into Mister Transmission and ask our technicians. Synthetic transmission fluids are usually the best.
You should check your transmission fluid every month. A properly working transmission won’t need fluid every month, but it’s a good habit to get into. Take 15 minutes on the first Saturday of every month, for example, and check the levels and quality of your transmission fluid. If your levels are too low, top them up. If you’re topping them up every month, check underneath your vehicle for a leak. If the transmission fluid smells bad or looks opaque as opposed to semi-translucent, something might be wrong, so bring your vehicle into a transmission shop.
All of the above pretty much pertains to manual transmissions, too, except the fluid in question might be different. It is increasingly common for manual transmissions to use automatic transmission fluid, but they may also use motor oil, hypoid gear oil, or transmission oil. If you’re unsure which fluid is right for your manual transmission, you can ask the technicians at Mister Transmission.
If you use your vehicle for towing, be careful not to overload it. Towing weights too heavy for your transmission is a good way to damage it. You should also avoid towing in overdrive.
Transmissions frequently become too hot. If this happens, the internal components within the transmission can burn, including the fluid which is meant to cool it. Pay attention to how hot your transmission is and try to keep it cool. Your transmission may benefit from the installation of an auxiliary cooler.
If you suspect there’s a problem with your transmission, bring it in to Mister Transmission. There’s no benefit to waiting. Transmission problems don’t become less bad by waiting around and doing nothing, so nip those problems in the bud.
