The “diagnostics” in “vehicle diagnostics” come from the verb “to diagnose”. This means to analyze something for the purposes of detecting a problem and diagnosing its cause. We most often use this word in the field of medicine. If you feel unwell but you’re not sure what’s causing the problem, you visit a doctor and, hopefully, with their knowledge and their tests, they can determine the problem, diagnose your ailment, and offer a remedy. You may also occasionally run computer diagnostics on your hard drive to find any problems and clear out space.
With vehicles, the same principle applies. If you have a flat tire or if your brakes aren’t effective enough at stopping your vehicle, then it’s clear what the problem is.
