The Top Ten Models with Major Transmission Problems

Which transmissions have the most problems? Here are the ten models with the most transmission problems, as detailed by Car Guide.

10. Chevrolet Traverse

The 2013 Chevrolet Traverse included a transmission that has not held up well over time. The typical mileage for this transmission ranges from 175,000 km to 225,0000 km. According to Consumer Reports, a similar vehicle with a more reliable transmission is the Toyota Highlander.

9. Nissan Altima

If you bought a 2016 Nissan Altima, you could expect to get 65,000-125,000 km out of it. If you’re looking at buying a Nissan Altima but are worried about its transmission, a Toyota Camry or VW Passat might be a better option (all alternatives suggested by Consumer Reports).

8. Nissan Rogue

The 2011/2012 Nissan Rogue left a lot to be desired in the transmission department. While its typical mileage of 150,000-240,000 km isn’t terrible, it might require several repairs. The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are perhaps better options.

7. Infiniti QX60

One hopes to get more than 150,000 km out of a transmission, but with a 2014 Infiniti QX60, you can’t expect more. A Lexus RX provided better value.

6. Ford Fiesta

From 2011-2014, Ford released a lot of Fiestas that caused a lot of people a lot of problems, even if they could get up to 235,000 km. The Honda Fit and Hyundai Accent offer fewer headaches.

5. Nissan Murano

A 2011 or 2013 Nissan Murano’s transmission might get you up to 190,000 km, but it’s likely to have some problems. The Ford Edge and Toyota Highlander should be better.

4. Kia Forte

It may have only been released in 2019, but many Kia Forte owners found that their transmission gave up after just 20,000-40,000 km! You’d get more mileage from a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, or Kia Soul.

3. Ford Focus

Ford has definitely had some transmission problems over the years. A Focus made between 2012-2017 could be quite problematic. You’d be lucky to get 100,000 km out of it. More reliable options include the Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Mazda3.

2. Nissan Pathfinder

Nissan definitely has a bad track record with transmissions. The 2013-2014 Pathfinders are among the worst. A typical mileage of 90,000-175,000 km isn’t terrible, but all the repairs you might need over those miles are. Toyota Highlanders have better transmissions.

1. Nissan Sentra

Nissan again! If you have a 2012, 2013, or 2015 Sentra, prepare to spend some time at your local transmission shop. Over 120,000-200,000 km, one of these Sentras can give you repeated problems. These problems are not seen as often in a Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, or Mazda3.

Blair and his team at...

Blair and his team at this location seem to be the go-to for known and unknown transmission types and were recommended by another mechanic shop. For example, I needed to replace a transmission on a 2003 Right-Hand-Drive (RHD) Hybrid Toyota Estima I imported and they were able to swap it out. I appreciated that someone in the city was willing to get creative and not turn me away because it wasn't part of a pricing template.During a more recent visit, I needed a diagnostic for a Used Nissan Pathfinder I had purchased and requested a CVT fluid change. The diagnostic returned a faulty Mass Air Flow sensor. The front desk (Darren) went with an OEM sensor ($600) versus one of the $200 sensors you find on Amazon and his rationale for doing so seemed sound as many of the reviews showed that oversea-sourced sensors from Amazon fail within a year.Perhaps I'm of a more curious nature than most, and I have plenty of questions about the work being performed, what's being used, and the condition of the fluids being removed. I appreciate when shops help me understand their rationale. Darren is a pleasant-enough fellow, however, I did not feel on my last visit that we were in sync when I was seeking information on the condition of my transmission and fluids. At one point I was told that, "Curiosity killed the cat," which I found an odd response to a straightforward question. I'll chalk it up as a misunderstanding. My advice to this location is that a little information goes a long way to reassuring the customer. If Darren had been a bit more curious about the work being performed, I would have felt in a better position to say it was money well spent. My vehicle doesn't drive or perform any different since having the sensor and CVT fluid changed, so in my case, I would have welcomed a confident accounting of the condition of the fluids and work. Dare I suggest photos as some of the other shops are now doing. I'm glad we have Blair and his mechanics here in the city doing the work they do. My suggestion for improvement is that they modernize some of their process and systems (eg. photos on file) so that customers like myself can feel reassured throughout the interaction and beyond.
