Transmission maintenance is absolutely imperative to ensure long and efficient life for a transmission. But transmission maintenance is only valuable if done right. Here are four common transmission maintenance mistakes.
There is a lot of transmission maintenance that a transmission shop can do for you, but only if you bring your vehicle in for us to see it. If you don’t bring your transmission in for routine maintenance, it will almost assuredly cost you in the long run. There’s even some transmission maintenance you can do on your own to save yourself a bit of time and money if you want.
At Mister Transmission, we’re happy to check your fluid for you, but with most models of transmission, you can do that yourself, if you prefer. You just put your dipstick into the hole indicated in your owner’s manual and see if the transmission fluid level reaches the recommended line on your dipstick. If the level isn’t high enough, top up your fluid. If you find yourself having to top it up every month, you probably have a leak that needs to be checked out.
It’s not just your transmission fluid level that matters. You should check the quality of your fluid, too. Good transmission fluid is largely translucent with a reddish tinge. Damaged transmission fluid is opaque and often foul smelling. If your transmission fluid is damaged, bring your vehicle in for inspection.
In the 21st century, everything is computerized, even your transmission. But if you take your vehicle into an old-fashioned transmission shop that doesn’t have the newest technology and software, they won’t be able to help you detect any computer problems with your transmission. Mister Transmission has the latest software we can use to interface with your vehicle’s on-board computer.
Everything can look good. But how does your transmission perform under real conditions? That’s what the road test is all about. At Mister Transmission, we perform a comprehensive road test as part of our transmission maintenance. Over both a stationary and a driving test, the technicians at Mister Transmission will test every position of your transmission for harsh, soft, or erratic shifting, as well as late or early shift patterns. We will also test for slipping and worrying noises.

The evolution of transmissions has made these machines and systems increasingly complex. When transmission repairs are required, determining the cause and cure for what ails can be tricky.
