To rebuild a transmission is no mean feat. It is something that is reserved for only the worst transmission problems. But how does it work?
Rebuilding a transmission could become necessary for a variety of reasons, but it ultimately boils down to two things: either the transmission is so wholly damaged as to negate the efficacy of any specific repair or the problem part(s) cannot be identified while the transmission remains within the vehicle. Any transmission repair that involves removing the transmission from the chassis is already fairly involved, but sometimes technicians do this because, while they know where the problem lies, they simply can’t access it with the transmission remaining in situ.
Rebuilding a transmission means too many parts need to be replaced or the cause of the problem remains mysterious. Some specific causes that could lead to a transmission rebuild being necessary include a front-end collision, persistently driving with insufficient levels or quality of transmission fluid, catastrophic overheating, and more.
A transmission rebuild, also called a transmission overhaul, is a meticulous process. Each individual part within the transmission is removed and examined. If it is determined that the part is still in working order, it is cleaned in a special solution and then returned. If it is damaged beyond minor wear and tear, it is replaced. Certain parts, such as bands and other friction surfaces, are replaced regardless, as a matter of course.
A transmission shop might give you the option of simply replacing a transmission with an entirely different one instead of a time-consuming transmission rebuild. However, at Mister Transmission, we usually caution our clients against taking this option. When you replace a transmission, you almost never get to replace it with a brand new transmission. Instead, it is a refurbished transmission.
These refurbished transmissions have unknown provenances. It’s hard to know where they come from. All their parts could come from different places. There’s no way to ensure that each individual component is in good working order. These parts can even be from different models of transmissions which can cause further problems. A proper transmission rebuild is the only way to ensure that every component is in good working order.
Transmission rebuilds are among the most expensive transmission repairs. This is why regular transmission maintenance and service is so important as it lessens the probability you will need a transmission rebuild. Mister Transmission offers routine transmission service as well as transmission rebuilds.

The evolution of transmissions has made these machines and systems increasingly complex. When transmission repairs are required, determining the cause and cure for what ails can be tricky.
