A slipping transmission is one of the most common transmission problems, but what should you do if you encounter your transmission slipping while driving?
“Transmission slipping” is a problem that occurs when an automobile’s engine’s RPM speed doesn’t match the speed of the vehicle. In this case, the transmission slips into gear without corresponding to its speed. As a result, the vehicle will probably take too long to get to proper speed. Occasionally, the transmission might even change gears on its own.
Let’s say you’re pulling out of a parking spot and then you’re ready to shift into drive. You do so, and then a few seconds later, all of a sudden, you’re in neutral. This is pretty annoying, this is one of the most common way’s for a transmission to slip out of gear.
But what if you hadn’t just pulled out of a parking spot? What if you were in the middle of the road, or even on the highway when this happens? This is when a transmission slip can be incredibly dangerous. And apart from the danger at the moment, repeated transmission slips indicate the potential of significant damage within your transmission. So what should you do? Drive safely to your destination—or pull over to the side of the road—and make an appointment with Mister Transmission.
The first thing the technicians at Mister Transmission will do if your transmission is slipping is to inspect it. This is because there isn’t one sole cause of transmission slips. Slipping can be caused by a number of issues. Some of these include:
Transmission fluid is always a good first thing to check because poor quality or insufficient levels of transmission fluid can cause just about any transmission problem. It’s important to have enough fluid and that it’s in good condition. It should smell neutral and be largely translucent.
For manual transmissions, the clutch is perhaps the most common failure point.
Broken and worn-out bands or clutches are a common automatic transmission issue.
In automatic transmission, the torque converter is arguably the most common failure point.
Gears wear down causing damaged and overheating over time.
