A transmission overhaul is a type of repair. It’s a major transmission repair. Like many transmission repairs, it’s essentially a replacement. If something doesn’t work, then a technician will replace it when conducting an overhaul. This is true of individual parts within the transmission and it can be true about the entire transmission itself.
A transmission overhaul is a major transmission repair, so it’s only necessary in select instances. The majority of transmission repairs are relatively minor. They involve flushing out old transmission fluid, replacing clutches or solenoid packs, or making minor adjustments. But these services can’t solve every transmission problem.

If your transmission has suffered a catastrophic failure, you may need a transmission overhaul. This could be because of massive overheating, a collision, or if you’ve left your transmission fluid or oil in long enough that it’s cycled so much particulate matter through your transmission to severely damage it. If your transmission is essentially unworkable, you’ll have to replace it or overhaul it.
Even with expertise, skill, and technological diagnostics, some transmission problems remain stubbornly mysterious. If technicians cannot figure out the cause of your transmission problem, they’ll have to take it apart. This requires the removal of the transmission from the chassis and a great deal of labour.
Let’s say a transmission tech has said you need an overhaul. What then? Well, you can either replace the transmission whole hog, or have them rebuild it piece by piece. The former option might sound quicker, and it usually is.
