Why Do We Specialize in Just Transmissions?

Why Do We Specialize in Just Transmissions?

If you have owned a vehicle for several years or more, you know that there is a lot of maintenance and repair that a vehicle of age requires to keep it running properly and efficiently. Tires need to be rotated and replaced; even switched out twice a year for winter tires if required. Brakes need to be tuned up. Mufflers, windshield wipers, and headlights need to be replaced periodically.

You might be able to get all these various services done at the same place. There are some auto body shops that can perform all of the above repairs/maintenance. But then there are some shops that specialize. There are some shops that also specialize in transmissions. But why? Why do we need specialist transmission shops?

The Transmission

Brakes are extremely important, but fairly simple in how they operate. Tires need a lot of attention and maintenance, but it’s not a complicated procedure to rotate a vehicle’s tires. Transmissions, on the other hand, are quite a different proposition. The transmission is arguably the most complex and intricate part of any vehicle. And this is because, in part, the transmission isn’t really just one part of a vehicle, but rather it is an combination of many different parts working together in perfect synchronicity (when it works) to make your vehicle, well, move.

You might well think that it is the engine that drives the wheels and makes the vehicle “move”, and this is true. But, an internal combustion engine needs to be adapted to drive the wheels of a vehicle. Engines need to operate at a relatively high rotational speed, which is not conducive to starting, stopping, or slower travel. That’s where the transmission comes in. The transmission reduces the higher engine speed to the slower wheel speed, increasing torque in the process. The transmission is the gearbox. When you change gears, you’re using your transmission. If your transmission is functioning improperly, you’re going to have a lot of issues with your vehicle.

Transmission Shops

So transmissions are important. But so are brakes and tires. Why do transmission repairs need shops all to themselves? This is because transmissions are big, complicated, and require a lot of skill and expertise to navigate. A problem with your brakes is relatively easy to diagnose and discover. The transmission on the other hand has any number of things that can go wrong with it and a number of parts that may need to be repaired or replaced. That’s why you would want a transmission shop working on your transmission and not any kind of auto body shop.

Transmission Shop Services

At a transmission shop, you can expect the technicians to test your transmission and properly diagnose any issues. At Mister Transmission we start with a free multi-check inspection: a four-part inspection that rigorously tests your transmission to see what the problem is. With newer and increasingly complex transmissions seen today, we have special equipment that can interface with your computer’s onboard computer to discover the problem. This allows us to diagnose the problem and make any necessary repairs, whether that means a minor adjustment, such as resealing to keep transmission fluid from leaking or replacing accessible parts, or (if necessary) performing a complete transmission overhaul.
