Transmission Overhaul — When Your Transmission Needs More Than a Quick Fix

When your vehicle starts slipping gears, shuddering on acceleration, or refusing to shift smoothly, the problem often runs deeper than a fluid change or a minor adjustment can solve. A transmission overhaul addresses the root cause — worn internal components, degraded clutch packs, failed solenoids, or damaged gear sets — before those issues leave you stranded or facing a full transmission replacement. Ignoring the early warning signs doesn’t make them disappear; it accelerates the damage and drives up the eventual repair cost. At Mister Transmission Kingston, our specialists have been performing transmission overhauls across Canada since 1963, with the expertise and equipment to do the job right.

What Is a Transmission Overhaul?

A transmission overhaul — also called a transmission rebuild — involves removing the transmission from the vehicle, completely disassembling it, inspecting every component, replacing all worn or damaged parts, and reassembling it to manufacturer specifications. It is a more comprehensive solution than a basic repair and a more cost-effective alternative to full transmission replacement when the core housing and major components are still structurally sound.

A transmission overhaul typically includes:

  • Full disassembly and cleaning of all internal components
  • Replacement of clutch packs, bands, seals, and gaskets
  • Inspection and replacement of solenoids, sensors, and electronic components as needed
  • Torque converter inspection and service
  • Reassembly to OEM specifications
  • A complete transmission fluid service with the correct fluid type for your vehicle

Common Signs You May Need a Transmission Overhaul

Not every transmission problem requires a full overhaul, but certain symptoms strongly suggest the internal components have worn beyond the point of simple repair. Watch for:

  • Gear slipping — The transmission shifts into a gear but then slips out unexpectedly while driving.
  • Rough or delayed shifting — Noticeable hesitation, jerking, or clunking when changing gears.
  • Shuddering or vibration — Felt most often during acceleration or at highway speeds.
  • Burnt transmission fluid — Dark, opaque fluid with a burnt smell signals serious internal wear.
  • Check engine or transmission warning light — Often triggered by solenoid or sensor failures detected during transmission diagnostics.
  • Complete loss of drive — The vehicle moves in neutral or fails to engage any gear at all.

If you’re experiencing more than one of these symptoms simultaneously, a transmission rebuild service is likely more economical than patching individual components one by one.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long does a transmission overhaul take? +

The time required for a transmission overhaul depends on the vehicle make and model and the extent of internal wear discovered during disassembly. Most overhauls take between three and five business days. Your Mister Transmission Kingston technician will provide a realistic timeline after completing the initial diagnostic inspection, so you can plan accordingly.

  • How much does a transmission overhaul cost? +

Transmission overhaul costs vary based on transmission type (automatic, manual, or CVT), the number of components requiring replacement, and the vehicle's specific requirements. Because every unit is different, Mister Transmission Kingston provides a written estimate after inspection — not a vague range over the phone. This ensures you understand exactly what the work involves and why before any repairs begin.

  • Is a transmission overhaul worth it, or should I just replace the transmission? +

In many cases, a transmission overhaul is the more economical and practical choice. If the transmission housing and major structural components are intact, rebuilding the unit to OEM specifications restores full performance at a lower cost than sourcing and installing a replacement. Our technicians will give you an honest comparison of both options, including the associated costs and warranty coverage, so you can make the decision that makes the most sense for your vehicle and budget.

My girlfriend and I had to have the flex plate/ flywheel replaced on our 2017 Dodge Journey SXT. We both said “ oh great , we won’t be able to afford to have it fixed. The finance company that financed the car has a list of approved locations that they send customers to for repairs. We have an extended warranty on the car. Thats another story altogether. The first place we took it to ( won’t name the company because that’s going to be a separate review) quoted us $2,300 to fix it with parts and labour. We figured because it was transmission related, we figured that was acceptable. Then we found out that the extended warranty wouldn’t cover it. On top of that, they never took it for a road test. This is where MR. TRANSMISSION comes into play. They are also an approved repair location. We took it there, explained what was the problem was. First thing they did and said was that they were going to take it for a road test, to confirm what the issue was at no charge whatsoever. They confirmed that it was indeed the flex plate / flywheel . Here is where we decided that MR. TRANSMISSION was going to get all of our future business. They quoted us $1,358 including taxes, parts and labour. They also confirmed that the extended warranty wouldn’t cover not cover the cost of the repairs. Now here is where things got even better for us. They deal with a 3rd party warranty/ insurance company that covers repairs, and they approved the repairs for us. All we had to pay was a $53 deductible. Then make bi-weekly or monthly payments. So there was more than $1,000 dollars difference between the 2 separate quotes and they gave us a 1 year warranty on the repairs, no questions asked. So hats off to MR. TRANSMISSION for the awesome customer service and professionalism. They went the extra mile for us. Also a big thank-you to Jennifer for walking us through the process and keeping our frayed nerves to a minimum. JOB WELL DONE MR.TRANSMISSION

amazing experience! I recently brought my 2018 GMC Sierra to Mr. Transmission, Matt was amazing to deal with, my truck was having issues with the torque converter shutter over 100km/h and a hard shift between 1st and 2nd gear. Matt and his team did a rebuild on the transmission, explained everything in detail and had different options and they were extremely patient and understanding when it came to warranty, and picking/dropping off the truck! definitely a happy customer!!!!

I recently had my car into a shop to replace my wheel bearing, I got a call that a seal on my transmission needed to be replaced and was leaking and would need to go to a transmission shop, which caused some stress as it’s a month before birthdays/christmas. My shop told me they had called Matt at Mister Transmission who could get me in the next week if I wanted, one sigh of relief as I’ve heard good reviews. I phoned Matt got an appointment set up and dropped my car off. Matt and his staff looked at my car and gave me a quote and said he could get it done the next day. I gave the go ahead and they completed the work, he pointed out some issues he found while it was on the hoist which was appreciated. My car is fixed, my transmission was saved and the communication was amazing during the process. Huge shoutout to Matt and his staff for relieving some of the stress that comes with hearing “transmission work”!

Happy with the outcome! Recently my GMC Sierra developed transmission problems. Engine light on dash confirmed a transmission temp sensor failure. It also had dreaded Chevy shutter at slow speeds. Other shops wanted to charge me just to diagnose the problem. Mr. Transmission did so at no cost! Matt was great. He explained my options and didn't pressure me into the $8000 rebuild. I decided to take a chance on the less expensive option. Changing the fluid, filter and replacing the temp sensor assembly. He told me that once they started if anything major shows up he would call and we could consider the next course of action. I got lucky for now. Everything went well. The truck is running much much better. Best part the total cost spent was a little less then quoted.
