What is a Toyota Manual Transmission?

Manual transmissions are not as common in Canada as automatic transmissions, but they’re still present in several Toyota models. These transmissions, also known as stick-shifts, manual gearboxes, and standard transmissions, require drivers to shift gears themselves by using the clutch and gas pedals. The clutch is the first stage in the transmission and the gearbox is the second. It’s usually located at the rear of the engine, with the clutch between them. Manual transmissions typically range from three to six different gear ratios, with most having five or six.

What are the common problems in a Toyota manual transmission?

Toyota enjoys a reputation for reliability, and manual transmissions usually require fewer repairs than automatic transmissions. Given this, you might think that a Toyota vehicle with a manual transmission should require very little service. And this is true for many. But transmissions can be tricky things and there is a lot that can go wrong.

The Toyota Tacoma especially has had its fair share of issues. These include broken crossmembers, throwout bearing failure, and difficulty shifting gears. When you notice these issues, it’s wise to bring your Toyota to Mister Transmission of Clone for inspection as soon as possible.

How we diagnose transmission problems

When you bring your Toyota to us, we’ll listen to what you have to say. Sometimes we can diagnose transmission problems just by hearing what the transmission has been doing lately. Some common signs of Toyota manual transmission problems include:

  • A sticking clutch pedal
  • A squeaking clutch pedal
  • Clunking when shifting
  • A lost gear shifter

Today, Toyota vehicles have onboard computers. These computers help the car and the transmission run more efficiently. However, they can also make repairs more complicated. Thankfully, we at Mister Transmission of Clone have innovative diagnostic technology that allows us to interface with your Toyota’s onboard computer.

To determine your transmission’s problem, we’ll connect your Toyota’s onboard computer to our diagnostic equipment. This gives us a code that can indicate where the problem is. After an inspection and a possible adjustment, we can perform a test drive. This enables us to test how your transmission handles in real-world conditions.

This is my second time...

This is my second time working with Frank. Our initial Nissan transmission replacement still drives like new after 3yrs/100,000km+ put on it. Frank is true honest mechanic and there is a reason his shop has a 5 star rating. After a horrible encounter with a Nissan dealer who nickel and dimed us while diagnosing everything but the problem (they charged over $200 to replace 2 axle nuts that didn't even fix the issue) we cut our losses and took our vehicle to Frank. Just 1 part replaced and all the vibrations were gone. Frank returned the defective parts to us (something the dealer refused to do) and explained what the issue was exactly. I estimate we saved over $800 going with Frank vs what the dealer quoted (possibly more since they were charging for unnecessary "repairs"). We'll definitely be returning to Frank for all of our drivetrain issues. He's no nonsense and understands the value of good customer relationship.
