What Is a Honda Automatic Transmission?

Most Honda vehicles sold in Canada come with a traditional automatic transmission. These transmissions use sensors to determine when to shift gears, and change them with internal oil pressure. When shifting gears, an automatic transmission actually disconnects itself from the engine temporarily. An automatic transmission achieves different speeds by creating different gear ratios. The torque converter transfers power from the engine to the transmission by a process called “fluid coupling”. Regular transmission inspections and following a routine transmission maintenance schedule can keep your Honda automatic transmission working at peak efficiency.

What are the common problems in a Honda automatic transmission?

When people buy a Honda vehicle, they often do so because they want a reliable car that’s low maintenance. And Honda models can generally provide this. But they’re not perfect, nor are their transmissions. Many of these issues are standard among all transmissions, but some problems seem to happen to Honda transmissions more.

Transmissions slipping out of gear is fairly common for Honda vehicles. As with most transmissions, stop-and-go traffic and cold weather can be taxing on Honda transmissions. In any automatic transmission, the torque converter is a common fail point, and this is true of Honda transmissions, too.

How we diagnose transmission problems

At Mister Transmission of Hamilton, we can sometimes deduce the cause of a transmission problem just by hearing about the nature of that problem. We also know where to look for certain Honda problems. Some common signs of a problem with a Honda automatic transmission include:

  • Transmission slipping, grinding, or jumping
  • Overheating
  • Problems with acceleration
  • Contaminated transmission fluid
  • Check engine light turning on
  • Gears changing at high RPM

Honda models today have onboard computers. At Mister Transmission of Hamilton, we have diagnostic technology that allows us to communicate with these computer systems. Our first step to determine your transmission problems is to connect your Honda’s onboard computer to our diagnostic equipment. This generates a code that tells us where the problem is.

The next step is a test drive so we can assess your transmission’s performance in real time. Sometimes hands-on evaluations are necessary, but our innovative diagnostic technology is an important tool in diagnosing transmission problems. Often, Honda transmissions only need relatively minor repairs, but sometimes more elaborate repairs are required.

I had a great experience with this mechanic. He worked on my 2015 Jeep Cherokee and was able to diagnose and fix the issue quickly and professionally. He explained everything clearly, didn’t try to upsell unnecessary repairs, and the price was fair for the work that was done.My car is now running smoothly, and I really appreciate his honesty and attention to detail. It’s not easy to find a mechanic you can trust, but I would definitely recommend him to anyone looking for reliable and skilled service.Thank you so much Dan

I took my 2020 BMW 330i to Dan at Mr. Transmission after BMW tried asking me to pay a great deal of money to fix my rear differential seals. Dan was more than nice enough to not only change 1 but both seals for way less than BMW was asking for to do one seal. I then asked Dan to hide my dashcam wire and to my surprise for no extra charge it was done. I am extremely happy with the services and prices from Mr Transmission staff as well as Dan. This will be my new mechanic shop for all my vehicles. I was always under the impression that they only did transmission, oh to my surprise... Best service ever!!! It has been 2 weeks since my service and there isn't any issue. 👍🏽 Thanks guys!!!
