Transmission fluid is absolutely vital to automatic transmissions (as similar fluids are to manual transmissions). Transmission fluid cools and lubricates your transmission and without the right amount and right quality of transmission fluid, bad things will happen. Almost every type of transmission problem there is can be caused, or at least exacerbated, by insufficient quantities or quality of transmission fluid. That’s why a fluid check is often the first transmission service technicians will perform. Transmission fluid that has an unpleasant odour or that is discoloured may lead a technician to recommend an internal inspection of a transmission. You should also have your transmission serviced periodically.
In this age of increasing computerization, it won’t surprise you to hear that most new vehicles are designed with on-board computers that can regulate the functions of the transmission. This can make for efficient and easier to drive transmission. But it also offers more things that can go wrong. A good transmission shop will offer on-board diagnostics (OBD) computer scans as part of their transmission service. With the right tools, transmission techs can interface with your vehicle’s on-board computer and can more accurately pinpoint problems.
Sometimes there’s nothing like just getting out there and driving a vehicle to see how the transmission is doing. Road tests are an integral part of transmission service. A good transmission shop will offer both a stationary test and driving test. Every position of a transmission should be thoroughly tested for slipping, noises, erratic shifting, and early shift patterns.
If a problem is suspected but not fully understood after completing the other transmission services, a technician might recommend a lift inspection that allows a tech to check a variety of different components and see if a minor adjustment can solve a problem. A pan examination can determine the extent to which a transmission is damaged.
