How Much do Transmission Repairs Cost?

Transmission repairs are a bummer. We know it. Transmission repairs are typically unexpected and don’t they always seem to come at the worst possible time? The truth is, there is no convenient time for transmission problems. This is why keeping up with proper transmission maintenance and service is extremely important. But sometimes you can do everything right and still incur transmission problems. And then you might need a transmission repair. How much will that cost you?

The Transmission

The automobile is a marvelous piece of machinery that is made up of a many different components. If you have owned and driven your vehicle for a number of years, you might have had to replace your tires, your taillight, your windshield wipers, your muffler, and any number of other components. The same is true of your transmission. Not so much that you may have had to replace your transmission, but the transmission itself is made up of parts that may need to be replaced.

A lot of transmission repair has to do with replacing parts. And herein lies the key to the question of, “How much does transmission repair cost?”. It all depends on the part that needs to be replaced (assuming, for now, that replacing a part is the required transmission repair). If it is a small, accessible part, then the transmission repair should be relatively inexpensive. If the part is inaccessible, that will cost more.

Accessible vs. Inaccessible

When discussing accessible and inaccessible parts, we are referencing the location of the part in question within the transmission. Some parts can be accessed while the transmission remains within the body of the vehicle. Some parts can only be accessed when the transmission is removed from the chassis. As you can imagine, the accessible parts are easier to repair or replace. Unfortunately, not all transmissions are the same, so what might be an accessible part in one make of transmission, is inaccessible in another.

Expensive vs. Inexpensive Transmission Repairs

Replacing or repairing inaccessible parts tends to cost a bit more. But there are more expensive transmission repairs. A transmission overhaul, also known as rebuilding a transmission, requires the removal of the transmission from the vehicle and then the disassembly of the transmission. Every part is examined and, depending upon its condition, cleaned in a special solution and put back or replaced. Transmission overhauls are required in cases when the transmission is severely damaged or when the cause of the problem cannot be identified by other means.

Clearly, a transmission overhaul is a very involved process and as such, it costs quite a bit. But not all transmission repairs are as expensive. Some transmission repairs only require changing the transmission fluid and filter. Transmission fluid is integral to the transmission and it can become burnt or damaged. Servicing damaged transmission fluid for new fluid with a filter can sometimes solve all your problems. This is a relatively easy and inexpensive transmission repair.
