Learning about the Needs of your Chevrolet Transmission
Common Concerns with Chevrolet Transmissions
With any manufacturer, you might wonder what kind of transmission problems you should be watching for so that you can catch them before they can cause further damage to your vehicle. Some of the common concerns noted in consumer reviews and used car guides include transmission slipping, delayed engagement of transmission gears and difficulty shifting into some gears in cold weather.

Maintaining Your Chevrolet Transmission
As with any automobile manufacturer, maintenance is an important element for the life and performance of any vehicle, including transmission service such as transmission fluid checks and replacement. And like any manufacturer, Chevrolet recommends specific transmission fluids for their vehicles. Be sure to check with your dealer or transmission mechanic about the right fluid for your Chevrolet transmission.
Like many other auto companies, Chevrolet offers an online resource to search for the specific maintenance schedule for your vehicle, which includes recommendations on when transmission maintenance should be undertaken. The Maintenance Schedule allows you to select your vehicle and find out when certain services should be pursued.
For most vehicles, a check of the transmission fluid and an inspection of the hydraulic clutch is recommended every six months for the average driver. For those who drive in any of the following conditions, changing the transmission fluid should be changed at 80,000 km, 160,000 km and 240,000 km.
- City traffic in high temperatures year round
- Hilly or mountainous terrain
- Towing of any kind, including campers, boat trailers etc.
- Regular idling or stop-and-go usage as experienced by taxis, police and delivery services.
